Mosaics

Off the island of Anemoessa I can clearly see from above and through the prehistoric settlement of Poliochni three small boats with grey sails in converging courses. One comes from the northwest, the other from the west and the third from the southwest. After convergence, all three follow a common course to the east. I lift and wave my white shirt. Soon the three boats stop their course and the waves kick them up like a spinning top. Only the whistle of the wind can be heard. No other response, neither here nor there. I want to fly, to reach them. They can’t stay like this in between. But I feel my feet pinned down in the ruins of the settlement and my arms heavy and weightless now. Every man in his own place is comfortable and if he’s staying, I think. They have the same thought on the other side and they are back again, with my gaze fixed on them. Soon one of them diverges to the south. It reaches the mouth of the Meander and disappears into its meanders, a nail for Aydin. The other two continue side by side until they too are lost in the Dardanelles. Nearby is Rhydestus and much further away is Trebizond.
