Description
The content of the book moves along two parallel axes: One axis is temporal, based on the actual events that took place in the period 1940-1949 and the other axis is musical and cultural, based on the urban songs that were written and sung to describe the historical events of this period, as well as the feelings of the anonymous and anonymous authors, who were influenced and inspired by these events, but mainly by the suffering and the long struggles of the tortured Greek people. More specifically, the first axis refers, in order, to the War of 1940-41, the Occupation, the National Resistance, the Liberation and the Civil War (with direct references to the post-Civil War period). In other words, the historical, political, social and economic events of the 1940s, which includes the epic of the Albanian War, the tragedy of the Occupation, the epic of the National Resistance and the drama of the Civil War. The second axis refers to the work and discography of the Greek urban song, which thematically covers the events of this period and is divided into chapters presenting separately the work of the various genres of urban song, such as: the Rembetiko and Folk Song, the Light or European, the Inspectional and the Artistic Folk Song. For special reasons (which are adequately explained), genuine Guerrilla Song is also included, even though it is not considered to be urban, but pointing out (to distinguish it) the parallel presence of the Rebetan Guerrilla Song, of urban – of course – character. The book lists about 400 theme songs, with lyrics and full details (authors, performers, record details), with extensive commentary (historical, musical, political-social, etc.) on almost every song, as well as several hundred rare relevant photographs, sketches, posters, etc., of the era, which constitute shocking and irrefutable historical documents. As far as these theme songs of the 1940s are concerned, we can effortlessly say that this is a brilliant, cultural and popular musicological treasure that we ought to honour, to preserve as a valuable popular and cultural heritage and, finally, to pass it on to the younger generations of Greeks.
